Pokemon Go Expands 'Nearby' Tracker Testing

...

Pokemon Go players around the world are still trying to catch 'em all—a feat made much easier with Niantic's "Nearby" tool.

Made available in August to a handful of folks in San Francisco, the Nearby tracker—which helps users figure out where Pokemon are hiding— is now rolling out to parts of Arizona, Seattle, and the rest of San Francisco Bay area.

If that seems like an odd collection of locales, you're not alone. Friday's Twitter announcement—though met with excitement (more than 1,000 retweets and 5,000 "likes")—was ridiculed for its slow development and limited release. "Why not [enter city/country name here]?!" people wrote in response to the app's news.

Niantic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While the world anxiously awaits access to the "Nearby" tracker, all Android and iOS owners can tap into the latest update, available now on Google Play and the App Store. It includes minor text fixes, as well as access to the previously announced daily bonus/streak bonus scheme, which earns players a prize for their first catch and PokeStop visit each day; continue for seven days in a row to score a larger reward.

"These new bonuses will give you a better chance of capturing Pokemon with a related type, Niantic said in an October blog post. "For example, as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokemon such as Charmander, Vulpix, and Ponyta increases."

Trainers can work their way to a new tier by catching a number of same-type Pokemon. If a monster has multiple types, your bonus amounts to the average of your bonuses for each type. So if you snag a flying-and-psychic character—one worth plus-one and the other plus-three—your average bonus equals plus-two.

Finally, when you defeat a rival gym leader, you temporarily become the only player able to place a Pokemon in the open gym. Other changes reflect on prestige: The amount a rival gym loses when you defeat a regular member has increased, while that gained by training at a friendly gym has been lowered.
