Cheaper Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat Arrives Oct. 31

With winter on the horizon, temperatures are dropping and home heating bills are on the rise. But Ecobee today introduced a "lite" version of its Wi-Fi-enabled smart thermostat that promises energy savings of up to $80 when compared to rival devices.

The Ecobee3 Lite hits shelves across North America on Oct. 31. US consumers can look for the $169 gadget at brick-and-mortar Home Depot stores or online from Amazon, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Ecobee. Canadian home owners, meanwhile, can purchase the next-gen instrument for $219 CAD.

"The new Ecobee3 Lite delivers the many features of a premium smart thermostat—beautiful design, superior comfort, and an intuitive customer experience—but it's kinder to our customers' wallets than leading competitors," Ecobee CEO Stuart Lombard said in a statement.

Taking a page from the company's flagship product, Ecobee3 Lite features a touch-screen interface. It also offers support for Amazon Echo, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Wink, and IFTTT. Plus, this month's launch comes with a new mobile app for Android, iOS, and Apple Watch.

While it has been designed for compatibility with 95 percent of residential heating and cooling systems, consumers are encouraged to visit to ensure the thermostat will work in your home. Also visit the website to check whether you're eligible for a rebate from your utility provider.
