Google Trips Adds a 'Personalized Tour Guide' to Your Pocket

Google is trying to make it easier for its users to explore the world.

The company's new Google Trips app, available now for Android and iOS, tackles the most stressful aspects of traveling, like "day plans, reservations, things to do, food & drink," Google said in a blog post.

"Google Trips is a personalized tour guide in your pocket," according to Google. It works offline, so those who don't want to tap into overseas data while traveling can still look up information on their phones, whether they're out sightseeing or on a plane.

On its face, Google Trips looks like another travel app. It provides users updates on their itineraries, tracks their reservations for hotels, cars, and air travel, and even includes suggestions on where they should go. In total, Google says it provides "personalized" recommendations on day plans and other information for the top 200 cities in the world.

"We've automatically assembled the most popular sights, attractions, and local gems into a full day's tour — all based on historic visits by other travelers," Google wrote. "Say you're visiting Barcelona. You can choose from multiple day plans, like 'Eixample District,' which maps out the can't-miss buildings by Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish architect."

In fact, recommendations is the key vehicle for Google Trips. After a person picks one or two things that he or she would like to do, the app automatically recommends some other options based on that choice, the location, and what's around. A "magic wand" feature shows nearby sights and places to check out.

The Google Trips app is designed with a tile-like design that gives users access to their reservations, things to do, and more. Tiles are shown for each city a user wants to visit.

When it's all said and done, Google says that Trips will let users create their own "custom itinerary" within just minutes. It's also designed to take the guesswork out of planning vacations.

"Vacations are a chance to recharge and experience new places and cultures," Google says. "For your next trip, let us help you see all the sights you want to see, without all the work."
