When it comes to doing laundry, throwing your clothes into the washer isn't the unpleasant part: folding is. Fortunately, in the future, you may never have to fold your laundry again, because a machine will do it for you.
Meet FoldiMate: a robotic laundry-folding machine. We should say upfront that the FoldiMate doesn't exactly eliminate all your work: It can't handle large items like bed sheets or small ones like underwear and socks, and you have to manually clip each article of clothing to the machine. But even with its limitations, FoldiMate promises to help you finish a load of laundry two times faster than manually folding.
"FoldiMate is like having a friend that folds the laundry for you," the FoldiMate site says. "All you have to do is easily feed it using our patented Easy Clipping technology which takes about 3 seconds."
It can handle about 15 to 20 items per load, and promises to deliver "consistent, high-quality folds," every time.
On the down side, the FoldiMate is not yet available, and it won't be for a while. The California-based start-up developing the FoldiMate expects to start taking pre-orders next year and hopes to ship by 2018.
It will cost "a little more than an average washer or dryer, between $700 to $850," FoldiMate said. For now, you can sign up on the company's site to be notified when pre-orders start. Check it out in the video below.
FoldiMate isn't the first laundry folding robot. Back in January we introduced you to Laundroid from Japan-based Seven Dreamers. Unlike the FoldiMate, Laundroid lets you throw your crumpled clothes in a bottom bin like a pull-out freezer, and they're moved up to shelves neatly folded.
