Withings Body Cardio Scale Also Tracks Heart Health

Technology has made weight loss as easy as slapping on an activity tracker, connecting with a virtual trainer, and stepping on a smart scale.

But Nokia wants to make it even easier with the Withings Body Cardio connected scale. In addition to managing the usual weight, body mass index (BMI), body composition (fat, muscle, water, and bone mass), and standing heart rate, the device measures Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV)—a key indicator of cardiac strength.

Defined as the speed at which heartbeat-generated vibrations spread along the arterial wall, PWV is among the best standalone assessments of heart health, according to Nokia, which acquired Withings in April.

Traditionally used in clinical environments, the test is now available in your bathroom: Body Cardio computes PWV based on the user's age and time it takes for blood to flow from the heart to the vessels in the feet. A mobile app, Health Mate, highlights your PWV stats over time, indicating whether the numbers are normal, optimal, or at risk.

"Body Cardio redefines how people use connected scales, providing them with a tool to manage their weight as well as heart health," Cedric Hutchings, vice president of digital health at Nokia, said in a statement. "It is like getting information from your annual physical every day."

The $179.95 gadget stands 0.7 inches thin, with a flat aluminum base, footless design, and heat-tempered glass; it should work on any surface—wood, tile, or carpet. A built-in battery lasts up to one year between charges.

Currently available exclusively at Apple retail stores and Withings.com, the scale features weight-trend graphs, the previous day's step count, and the morning's weather report. Plus, it connects to the Withings Health Mate iOS and Android app to automatically sync data after every use. Users can also tap into the program's in-app coaching sessions, set goals, earn rewards, and celebrate health milestones.
