Cortana Web Searches Restricted to Edge, Bing in Windows 10

...

Microsoft Edge is now the only browser compatible with Cortana Web searches on Windows 10.

According to Microsoft General Manager Ryan Gavin, "we have seen some software programs circumvent the design of Windows 10 and redirect you to search providers that were not designed to work with Cortana. The result is a compromised experience that is less reliable and predictable.

"The continuity of these types of task completion scenarios is disrupted if Cortana can't depend on Bing as the search provider and Microsoft Edge as the browser," he says in a blog post.

The move doesn't ban competing browsers from Windows 10 (hopefully, Redmond learned its lesson on that one)—"you can continue to use your search engine and browser of choice," Gavin writes. But starting now, "Microsoft Edge will be the only browser that will launch when you search from the Cortana box."

Microsoft has been pushing hard for users to upgrade to Windows 10. And one Iowa TV news station learned that the hard way when a Windows 10 upgrade prompt disrupted a weather report. "Microsoft recommends upgrade to Windows 10; what should I do?" KCCI 8 News Meteorologist Metinka Slater quipped mid-broadcast. "Don't you love when that pops up?" Slater simply ignored the notification, switched to another map, and continued the broadcast.
