Liar, Liar, iPhone on Fire? Report Says Android Users More Honest

Own an Android device? You might be more honest than your iPhone-toting friends, according to a new study from researchers in the UK.

The researchers from University of Lincoln, Lancaster University, and University of Hertfordshire call theirs the first study linking personality and smartphone type. They gave more than 500 smartphone users questionnaires about themselves and their attitudes about their mobile phone.

The study revealed that iPhone users are more likely to be younger, female, and to see their phone as a status object. iPhone users are also more extraverted, and less concerned about owning devices favored by most people. In terms of gender, the researchers found that iPhone users are more than twice as likely to be women. In contrast, Android users are more likely to be male, older, more honest and agreeable, less likely to break rules for personal gain, and less interested in wealth and status.

David Ellis from Lancaster University suggested his team's research provides "useful clues when it comes to predicting [people's] personality and other individual characteristics."

The researchers also developed a computer program that can predict what type of smartphone a person owns based on the differences between iPhone and Android users.

"It is becoming more and more apparent that smartphones are becoming a mini digital version of the user, and many of us don't like it when other people attempt to use our phones because it can reveal so much about us," co-lead researcher Heather Shaw from the University of Lincoln said in a statement.

This is not the first study to jump into the mobile OS wars. In 2012, a survey found that Android users are most likely to put out on the first date. And in 2010, OKCupid found that people who own iPhones are having more sex than those who use BlackBerrys or Android phones. So, grain of salt and all that.
