Samsung Galaxy S8 to Feature AI Assistant

...

Samsung is developing a new digital assistant for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the South Korean firm's prototypes include a dedicated button to easily summon the AI-based helper.

Following last month's acquisition of artificial intelligence company Viv Labs (co-founded by the creators of Apple's Siri), Samsung is expected to integrate its new conversational user interface into future Galaxy smartphones.

"Samsung is excited to begin integrating initial AI capabilities into its future products and we look forward to sharing further details at a later date," a Samsung spokeswoman told PCMag.

The software maker declined to share any further details about the forthcoming technology.

Little is known, meanwhile, about the Galaxy S8—including when it will arrive. Typically, Samsung reveals a flagship phone at February's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Journal suggests it might not arrive until April, though Samsung has made no announcements about its timeline.

Samsung, which recently ended sales of its fire-prone Note 7 handset, could use a win to help restore faith among investors and customers. But despite a less-than-stellar third quarter, the company managed to hold onto its No. 1 position in the global smartphone market.

Samsung's next gadget release is the Gear S3 smartwatch, which arrives on Nov. 18 via Best Buy, Amazon, Macy's, wireless providers, and Samsung's website. The water- and dust-resistant wearable starts at $349.99, and features built-in GPS and support for Samsung Pay.
