Look for On-Screen iPhone Home Button if Physical One Breaks

...

One of the most notable iPhone 7 design changes was Apple's introduction of a force-sensitive home button that uses haptic feedback to mimic traditional presses. What happens, however, when the home button stops working?

iPhone on-screen home buttonAccording to one iPhone 7 owner, who shared their experience in a MacRumors forum, Cupertino's software automatically provides a temporary patch in the form of an on-screen home button. If the physical button is on the fritz, a glowing orb appears at the bottom of the display.

The news has fueled existing rumors that Apple will ditch the home button in next year's iPhone 8, replacing it with a digital version built directly into the edge-to-edge screen.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

The company did, however, this week push out another iOS update (version 10.0.3) to patch an issue with connections on Verizon iPhone 7s. Some iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users on Verizon's network have been plagued for weeks by the temporary loss of LTE connection, which forced back onto slower 3G speeds, according to Engadget.

As of last week, Apple's iOS 10 operating system was installed on 54 percent of active iDevices, according to the company. Analytics firm Fisku says it's actually higher at 67.7 percent, as does Mixpanel, which puts it at 67.27 percent.
