Ignoring Risk, Galaxy Note 7 Owners Continue Using Phone

...

It's been almost two weeks since Samsung issued a global Galaxy Note 7 recall due to the risk of explosion, but many people are still using the potentially dangerous devices.

According to data from mobile app development company Apteligent, Note 7 adoption "abruptly halted" after the recall as retailers stopped selling the phones and Samsung activated its exchange program. Usage by existing Note 7 owners, however, continued unchanged.

Note 7 Car Fire"The usage rate of the phone among existing users has been almost the exact same since the day of the recall," Apteligent's Andrew Levy wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

Anecdotal evidence backs up Apteligent's data on that point, as reports of Note 7 explosions continue to surface. Earlier this week, a Note 7 allegedly exploded inside a car in Port St. Lucie, Fla., causing the vehicle to become fully engulfed in flames.

"The driver of the car was unharmed and made statements to the police that he had been charging his Samsung 7 phone when it burst into flames," the Port St. Lucie Police Department wrote in a Tuesday Facebook post.

Samsung, meanwhile, is planning to release a Note 7 software update that will prevent the device from overheating (and exploding) by capping battery recharges at 60 percent. Samsung is now working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to get approval for the fix.

The CPSC last week urged "all consumers who own a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to power them down and stop charging or using the device."

Those in possession of a recalled Note 7 should seek an exchange. Note 7 owners can return to wherever they purchased the device or call 1-800-SAMSUNG to get an exchange.

Those who exchange their Note 7 for a new one (when they arrive) can look for a few markings on the box of replacement units that will signify that the phone is not explosive. Those indicators include a small black square on the white barcode label and a white sticker with a blue letter "S."
