People in Great Britain Love Apple's iPhone SE

Turns out, Apple's iPhone SE is super popular across the pond, and sales of the 4-inch handset aren't too shabby here at home, either.

According to new smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the iPhone SE was the top-selling device in Great Britain for the three months ending June 2016, accounting for 9.2 percent of smartphone sales, followed by the iPhone 6s at 9.1 percent.

The handsets helped Apple's iOS grab 37.2 percent of Great Britain's smartphone market in the second quarter of 2016, an increase of 3.1 percentage points compared to a year earlier. That put Apple's mobile OS in second place behind Android, which captured 57.3 percent of the market.

Back in the US, iOS accounted for 31.8 percent of smartphone sales in Q2, a 1.3 percentage point year-over-year increase. Android, meanwhile, came out on top of the market despite facing a "small decline," with its share dropping to 65.5 percent from 66.1 percent a year ago.

Together, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus accounted for 15.1 percent of smartphone sales during the period, overtaking the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, which grabbed a combined 14.1 percent. The iPhone SE came in third in the US at 5.1 percent.

In China, meanwhile, Apple's faces increased competition from local manufacturers and "continued supply constraints," Kantar said. There, iOS continued its streak of year-over-year declines during the second quarter, dropping 1.8 percentage points to 17.9 percent of the market. That pushes Apple behind Huawei at 25.7 percent and Xiaomi at 18.5 percent.

Despite that setback, the future looks bright for Cupertino and its iPhone SE overall.

"Anticipation for the newest iPhone, usually released in late September every year, typically means a weaker summer period for iOS," Kantar said. "However, sales data shows that 49 percent of US iPhone owners and 51 percent of Chinese iPhone owners own an iPhone 5s or older. This represents a large opportunity to upgrade these consumers to the latest four-inch iPhone."
