Huawei: We're Making Another Nexus Device

...

Huawei has a good thing going with its Google phone in the US, the Nexus 6P, so the Chinese company is making another Nexus device.

Charlene Munilall, Huawei's General Manager of its South African consumer business group, confirmed the news in an interview with Gear Burn, telling the site "we're doing the Nexus again this year, by the way."

The news shouldn't come as too much of a shock. Huawei's Device VP of smartphones Chanzhu Li earlier this year tipped a future Google collaboration. "I think of [the Nexus 6P] as a starting point," Li said. "Our local team is discussing the next product with Google. So far it's not clear [what it will be], but there are a lot of potentials to explore."

As Pocket Lint points out, the next Huawei Nexus may not be a phone. Rumor has it HTC is making both upcoming Nexus handsets — reportedly codenamed Marilin and Sailfish — so Huawei may have a tablet in the works.

The Nexus 6P, which launched last year alongside LG's smaller Nexus 5X, is Huawei's most successful US phone to date. The handset earned an "excellent" rating in PCMag's review, nabbing props for its excellent camera, long battery life, snappy performance, attractive display, and more.

"The Google Nexus 6P is one of the best unlocked smartphones you can buy, thanks to a heady combination of powerhouse hardware, an excellent camera, a reliable fingerprint scanner, and the promise of the latest Android updates," we concluded.
