Want to try VR? Samsung’s giving away free Gear VR headsets again

...

Now is a very good time to buy a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, in particular those which work with the Gear VR virtual reality headset, because Samsung’s giving one away for free to new Galaxy owners until June 19. It’s an extension of an offer recently made to those who purchased the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, but this time it’s open to anyone who grabs a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, or the Galaxy Note 5.

If that’s you, then you won’t just receive a Gear VR, because Samsung’s including a bundle of games and other content worth $50. However, it’s not going into detail about what’s included, so it’ll be a surprise when you receive the headset.

To apply, you first need to buy one of the smartphones mentioned above, then head over to Samsung’s promotional page and fill in all the required details, including your new phone’s IMEI number. Don’t expect to get very far if you picked up a secondhand Galaxy S6, or handed over your money at Dodgy Jim’s Smartphone Emporium; the offer’s only open to those who bought phones from places like AT&T, Best Buy, Target, or Samsung itself.

We’re huge fans of the Gear VR headset, and gave it our coveted Product of the Year 2015 award, and consider it an excellent way to get started with VR without spending thousands on an HTC Vive setup, or being disappointed by Google Cardboard. While it’s great Samsung’s giving a Gear VR away to buyers of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which can be found at lower prices, we’d recommend the Galaxy S7 Edge if you can afford it. It’s a great phone that operates well with the Gear VR.

The free Gear VR deal will end on June 19, so don’t wait around.
