Apple Faces Patent Suit Because iPhone ...Can Make Calls

...

Apple has been hit with a new patent lawsuit that goes after the iPhone maker because its smartphones can make calls and send emails.

Corydoras Technologies LLC is suing Cupertino in part because 20 device models "are capable of being used for voice communication." That includes the iPhone 4 and above, iPad 2 and above, and iPad mini and above—all of which can be used for telephone and/or FaceTime audio calls, the rights to which Corydoras says it owns.

Other alleged infringements include having two cameras (front- and rear-facing), a microphone and speaker, a virtual assistant (Siri, who allows voice-controlled dialing), specifically assigned ringtones, and "Block this Caller" software, as well as the ability to display geographic locations and send and receive email.

Not to mention that the iPhones and iPads "are wireless communication devices"—just like Corydoras Technologies' patents, acquired from Japan and "presumed valid."

Filed Friday in the Texas Eastern District Court in Anderson County, known as a haven for patent trolls, the suit requests damages from Apple and a jury trial "on all claims and issues so triable."

The case is nearly identical to a claim Corydoras brought against Samsung, which was dismissed in April. The Apple case is set to be heard by Judge Rodney Gilstrap, according to Patently Apple.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

Relay for Reddit Jumps to V8 With New Media Viewer

Relay for reddit, the best reddit app on Android by a mile (at least in my opinion), received an update yesterday to v8 that tweaks some UI elements, but really is headlined by a new media viewer. The new media viewer adds some fun Material Design animations as you move in and out of it, now has zoomable GIFs, should load GIFs faster, and gives you a filmstrip view when in albums.
